Important Changes To Registrations Rules

And Membership Fees

Following the adoption of the new Society Articles the salient rule amendments to cover the introduction of the new Coloured Ryeland Flock book are as follows:

Registration of Sheep

The key change to the registration arrangements is the introduction in

2011 of a new Coloured Ryeland flock book for the registration of Coloured Ryelands born to parents that both have a coloured fleece. The existing supplementary register of the Ryeland flock book was introduced some 20 years ago to register sheep having a coloured fleece born to Ryeland parents (white fleeced) due to the expression of the recessive coloured gene, so called accidental births, this will not change.

Over the years members have been increasingly using the supplementary register of the Ryeland flock book to register "pure" coloured ryelands where both parents are coloured, the new Coloured Ryeland flock book will be used to record these registrations from 2011.

A supplement to the new Coloured Ryeland flock book will also be introduced to record lambs born as a result of mixed mating between Ryelands (white fleeces) and Coloured Ryelands regardless of the fleece colour of the resulting progeny; this practice is however discouraged by the Society.

In this respect the Society has introduced a "grading up" system to take "accidental" coloured Ryeland births registered in the supplement to the Ryeland Flock book to "pure" Coloured Ryelands registered in the new Coloured Ryeland Flock book with "one way movement" as recommended by Defra.

A further key change is that a separate prefix will no longer be required for the supplement of the Ryeland Flock book, both the main section of the Ryeland flock book and its supplement will now be covered by the Ryeland prefix and number.

A separate prefix and number will however be required for the Coloured Ryeland Flock book and that will also cover the supplementary register of the Coloured Ryeland Flock book. In this respect existing members that have previously registered a Coloured Ryeland prefix may transfer that prefix to cover the new Coloured Ryeland flock book at no additional cost.

Registration Fees & Forms

Ryeland Ewe Lambs £5

Ryeland Ram Lambs £15

Ear Tagging

It is noted by some members that plastic loop tags that have numbers all the way round the loop quickly rub off. Ear tags should be of a type that is permanent ie. for the life of the Ryeland Sheep.

Naming Ram Lambs

Example: The letter for 2007 was J and rams were given an appropriate name preceded by the Ryeland Flock Book Society Flock Number eg. Redgrove Jeremy. Please try to limit your ram names to a maximum of 18 characters. Incorrect or overlong names will be rejected.
