Ryeland Flock Book Society Annual Show & Sale
Ludlow Livestock Market -Saturday 29th August 2009
A strong entry of 127 pedigree Ryelands and Coloured Ryelands attracted a good crowd, and vendors were rewarded with a brisk trade at the Annual Ryeland Sale at Ludlow. A top price of 760gns was achieved by two lots. The first being the Reserve Male Champion, Juggis Laser, a ram lamb bred by Julian Wright, Leominster. Winner of the ram lamb class, under judge N Morgan, Eglwyswrw, was ably exhibited by Mr Wright’s son Tom. The lamb will go to the Oakberrow flock, run by Doreen Smillie and her partner Steve Grey. The second animal to make 760gns was a shearling ram, Dolwen Kaspar, bred and exhibited by J & S Donovan, Whitland. Second in the shearling ram class and winner of the prestigious “Wool on the Hoof” trophy, he was purchased by Staffordshire breeders Greg and Carole Shaw for their Roston Flock. Male Champion Dewi Fawr King bred and exhibited by P Mee, Whitland, was sold for 480gns to Yorkshire breeder, Patrick Wilkinson. |

Trade on females was equally brisk with the highest price going to David Lewis’s Pembrokeshire based Arberth flock for the second year running. Awarded the Female Championship by Judge K Jones, Redmarley, the shearling ewe realised 380gns. This daughter of Ruslin Champion was purchased by Mr D Evans, Pontarddulais. Reserve Female Champion was a ewe lamb bred by A Robinson’s Hawthorn Flock. Mrs Robinson justified her long trip down from Cumbria by receiving 250gns for her lamb which had been reserve female champion at both the Royal Highland and Great Yorkshire shows.
A strong entry of Coloured Ryeland sheep saw a good trade, particularly for females. The Female Champion, choice of judge P Bateman, Chwilog, was a ewe lamb bred by M Thornett, Llandrindod Wells. She made an excellent 400gns and will now join the Riverside flock of C & E Bateman, Brecon. Coloured Male Champion was Montgomery Kenco, a shearling bred by A & S McVicar, Newtown. He was sold to V Havard-Evans, Haverfordwest, for 270gns.
